Artillery units of Russia will replace Tochka-U tactical missile with Iskander-M

Russia’s Missile, Rocket and Tube Artillery Corps will fully replace the Tochka-U (NATO reporting name: SS-21 Scarab-B) tactical ballistic missile system with the Iskander-M (SS-26 Stone) complex by 2020, Corps Commander Lieutenant-General Mikhail Matveyevsky said.

Israel orders 17 more F-35A stealth fighters jets

Israel will buy 17 more F-35A stealth fighter jets yesterday, after a vote of approval yesterday, Nov. 27, by the country's Security Cabinet. This additionnal batch of "Adir" fighters will bring up Israel Air Force to a total of 50 F-35A by the end of 2030. These fighters are to be purchased with the military foreign aid received from the U.S through a Memorandum of Understanding signed in September 2016.

Belarus receives four more Yak-130 advanced jet trainers

Four brand-new Yakovlev Yak-130 combat training aircraft have been received by the Belarusian Air Force’s 116th Guards Attack Aircraft Air Base in Lida (Grodno Region, Belarus). "The delivery of another four Yak-130 combat training planes have enabled our pilots and cadets to continue to hone their skills in flying Generation 4++ aircraft," the BelTA news agency quoted Belarusian Air Force Commander Oleg Dvigalyov as saying.

Future Independence-class LCS USS Gabrielle Giffords Completes Acceptance Trials

The future USS Gabrielle Giffords (LCS 10) successfully completed its acceptance trials Nov. 18. The trials consisted of a series of in-port and underway demonstrations for the Navy's Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV).

Apollo software engineer Margaret Hamilton receives Presidential Medal of Freedom

 
 
Amid all the publicity given to the more "famous" people recently awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom was Margaret Hamilton. She invented the term "software engineer" starting her career as a computer programmer at MIT in the 1960s. In August 1961, NASA issued a contract to MIT to design the Apollo spacecraft's guidance and navigational system. Hamilton presided over the in-flight software group. Real time avatar in Shakespeare's Tempest

The Royal Shakespeare Company is putting on a groundbreaking production of The Tempest in which the sprite Ariel, a central character in the play, is visualised by an avatar driven in real-time by an actor, Mark Quartley. Both the actor and the digital avatar are visible to the audience. As a big Shakespeare fan I'd love to see this performance and I can see how this fusion of technology and acting could be used in other Shakespeare plays; obviously Puck and the fairies in Midsummer Night's Dream and Banquo's ghost in Macbeth. McDonald’s To Open 25,000 Robot-Run Restaurants

It looks inevitable that more and more jobs will be lost to robots in the foreseeable future. With the advent of self-driving vehicles it's clear that many driving jobs are under threat. However, less obvious jobs, like working in fast-food restaurants, are now under threat. McDonald's has recently announced that it plans to open 25,000 robot-run restaurants. Now it's clear that McDonalds has missed its 2016 target, but the threat is still there.
